Getting out of the airport

Four ways to reach your hotel, what each really costs, and the one insurance rule that makes a cheap car rental stop being cheap at the counter.

Four ways out, and who each one suits

There is no single right answer. It depends on how many of you there are, how far you are going and what time you land.

Private transfer
Booked in advance
From $35 USD
one way, per vehicle, up to 8
Families, groups, late arrivals, anyone going past Puerto Morelos. Has to be booked before you land to be worth it.
Airport taxi
At the door
$65–120 USD
one way, per car, by zone
One or two people who did not plan ahead. Priced by zone, per car. Pay at the counter, not to the driver.
ADO bus ~$18 USD
per person, downtown
Solo travellers with light bags, going downtown or to Playa del Carmen. Only serves its own stops. From the stop you still need a taxi.
Car rental from $28 USD
per day
Anyone planning to drive the Riviera Maya, cenotes or ruins. Third-party liability insurance is required by Mexican law and is not what your card covers.

The advertised car rental price is not the price you pay. Mexican law requires third-party liability cover, and a credit card's own insurance does not satisfy it. A rate advertised at $5 a day arrives at the counter as $30–45 once the mandatory cover is added. That is not a scam — it is the law — but it is worth knowing before you compare quotes.

What the arrivals hall is like

Between customs and the exit there is a stretch where people will approach you offering transport, tours and timeshare presentations, some of them behind counters that look official. It is persistent rather than dangerous, and knowing it is coming takes all the sting out of it.

  • Nobody official stops you on the way out. If someone intercepts you, they are selling something.
  • «Free transfer» usually means a timeshare presentation. The ride is real; so are the ninety minutes you will spend in a sales room.
  • Official taxis have a counter, a fixed zone tariff and a printed ticket. You pay at the counter before you board.
  • A booked transfer waits past the doors, with your name on a sign, in the meeting area — not inside the hall.

Common questions

Is Uber available at Cancun airport?

Not for pickups you can rely on. Mexico's transport ministry (SICT) stated in a statement of 30 October 2025 that app companies hold no authorisation to collect passengers at the country's airports; the court protection Uber obtained covers how checks are carried out, not a permit. In March 2026 Cancun airport ruled out opening space to the platforms. Being dropped off at the terminal is a different matter and is done routinely. We recommend arranging your arrival another way — the reasons, with sources, are on our Uber page. Read the full answer

Can I pay in US dollars?

Taxis and transfers generally accept dollars, at a rate that favours them. Paying in pesos is cheaper. There are ATMs in every terminal — where to change money and which ATMs charge a fee .

Do I need to tip the driver?

It is customary but not obligatory. Somewhere between 10 and 15 percent, or 50–100 pesos on a Hotel Zone run, is normal and appreciated.

What if my flight lands at three in the morning?

Taxis and booked transfers both operate around the clock. The ADO bus does not run all night, so on a very late arrival it is not an option.

How do I get to Cancun airport by public transport?

The ADO bus is the only public option that reaches the terminals. It runs from the downtown bus station and from Playa del Carmen, drops at T2, T3 and T4, and costs around $18 USD per person. There is no city bus into the airport and no train. From the Hotel Zone you need a taxi or a booked transfer to reach a bus station first.
