Who can enter Mexico without a visa
If you hold a passport from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, most of the European Union, Japan, Australia, Argentina or Uruguay, you do not need a visa to visit Mexico as a tourist. You need a valid passport and nothing else.
Countries whose citizens enter with passport only
Germany, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom and Uruguay are among them, along with several island states and special administrative regions.
The full exemption list runs to dozens of countries and changes with bilateral agreements. If your country is not named above, check with the Mexican consulate nearest you before booking — we would rather send you to confirm than publish a list that might be a year out of date.
You may not need a visa even if your country normally requires one
This is the part almost nobody knows, and it saves a lot of people a trip to a consulate. You can enter Mexico without a Mexican visa if you hold any of the following, valid:
| Document | Issued by |
|---|---|
| Permanent residence | Canada, United States, Japan, United Kingdom, any Schengen Area country, or a Pacific Alliance member (Chile, Colombia, Peru) |
| A valid visa | United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, Schengen Area or Pacific Alliance countries |
| APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) | Approved by Mexico. Business travel by air only |
| Crew certificate or seaman's book | With the corresponding documentation, for aircraft and maritime personnel |
These routes only work if the document is valid on the day you travel and meets its own legal requirements. An expired US visa does not qualify, and neither does a visa in a passport you are no longer carrying.
Staying longer than 180 days
Any stay beyond 180 days requires a proper immigration process — temporary residence, student residence or permanent residence — regardless of how you entered the country. The tourist entry cannot simply be extended by leaving and coming back, and doing that repeatedly is what triggers questions at the border.
