Why you will see 44 or 56 somewhere else, and what those numbers mean. The figure commonly published is 56, and it includes carriers that no longer exist — Interjet stopped flying in 2020. A stricter count of current routes gives 44 across a full year. Ours is different again: 36 airlines actually observed operating in four days of August, which is low season. All three can be true at once; the one below is the one we can show you the flights for.
Who flies here, and into which terminal
Measured from the airport's own information system: 1,487 real flights across 8 windows on 4 different days. No airline appeared in more than one terminal, so these assignments are stable rather than an average of sources that disagree.

The honest limit of this measurement. Four days of August, which is low season here. An airline flying a seasonal route or twice a week may not appear above. These were listed by other sources and did not show up in our sample, so we neither assign them a terminal nor claim they have stopped: Aer Lingus, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, KLM, Lufthansa, Magnicharters, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, TAR Aerolíneas, Virgin Atlantic, Wingo.
Airlines that no longer fly to Cancun
Most directories still list these. If you are searching for one of them because it appears on an old booking, a forum post or another site's terminal guide, here is what happened to it and what covers its routes now.
No longer flying to Cancun

InterjetCeased operations · December 2020Suspended all flights in December 2020 after a long financial crisis and was formally declared bankrupt by a Mexican court in September 2022. It never returned.
Its domestic routes are now covered by Volaris, Viva Aerobus and Aeroméxico.

AeromarCeased operations · February 2023Announced the definitive end of operations on 15 February 2023, after losses it could not cover and with no new investor.
A regional carrier; the routes it served are now flown by other Mexican airlines.

Sunwing AirlinesMerged · May 2025Fully integrated into WestJet on 28 May 2025. The brand no longer operates its own aircraft.
Sunwing Vacations packages still exist, but the flight is operated by WestJet. If your booking says Sunwing, look for WestJet at the airport.

Mexicana de AviaciónFlying again, but not to Cancun · December 2023
The original Mexicana stopped flying in 2010. A new state-owned airline under the same name began commercial operations on 26 December 2023.
Its inaugural flight went to Tulum, not Cancun, and Cancun is not among the destinations it serves. It did not appear once in our sample of 1,487 flights, nor in the live board. If you are looking for a Mexicana flight into this region, the airport it serves is Tulum.
Airlines people expect to find here and will not
Cancun is a leisure market, and some of the world's best-known carriers simply do not serve leisure routes at this distance. It is worth knowing before you go looking:
- Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, ANA, Korean Air, Japan Airlines — none of them fly to Cancun. Traffic from Asia and the Gulf connects through Mexico City, Madrid, Amsterdam, Paris or a US hub.
- ITA Airways — the airline that replaced Alitalia does not currently serve Cancun. Italian traffic connects via Madrid or Paris.
- Ryanair, easyJet — European short-haul low-cost carriers do not operate transatlantic routes at all.
Where a site lists one of these as flying to Cancun, it is copying a directory rather than checking a schedule.
Finding your terminal
- Check the live board It shows the terminal assigned to each flight today. Arrivals and departures.
- Then your boarding pass Within a few hours of the flight, the airline knows first.
- Ignore a ticket bought months ago Assignments change between seasons. It is the least reliable source there is.
- Wrong terminal? It is fixable The free inter-terminal shuttle runs every 10 to 15 minutes.
Common questions
How many airlines fly to Cancun airport?
We counted 36 airlines operating across 1,487 real flights over four days in August 2026. The figure of 56 still published elsewhere includes carriers that no longer exist, such as Interjet, which stopped flying in December 2020. A count of current routes across a full year gives around 44.
Does Interjet still fly to Cancun?
No. Interjet suspended all operations in December 2020 and was formally declared bankrupt by a Mexican court in September 2022. It never returned. Its domestic routes are now covered by Volaris, Viva Aerobus and Aeroméxico.
Is Sunwing still flying to Cancun?
Sunwing Airlines was fully integrated into WestJet on 28 May 2025 and no longer operates its own aircraft. Sunwing Vacations packages still exist, but the flight is operated by WestJet — look for WestJet at the airport.
