Vapes and e-cigarettes: banned since January 2026
This is the single most important thing on this page, and it changed recently enough that most travel guides still get it wrong.
Since 16 January 2026, vaping devices are banned in Mexico. The ban is federal and absolute: it covers sale, import and commercialisation, and it includes the devices, their accessories and the substances they use. Disposables, single-use devices and nicotine-free versions are all covered.
Bringing any vaping device into the country is illegal even for personal use. Penalties run from one to eight years in prison, with fines that in practice can exceed 200,000 pesos depending on the case. At airports, random checks have been replaced by scanners that specifically detect lithium batteries.
The simple advice: leave it at home. There is no legal way to bring it in.
Medical cannabis prescribed in another country is not valid at the Mexican border. Legal status in your home state and a doctor's prescription do not change anything on arrival. Bringing it in is treated as importing a controlled substance.
The rest of what to check before you zip the bag
- Liquids in carry-on: standard international limits apply. There is no volume limit in checked baggage, but flammable materials are restricted.
- Lithium batteries and power banks: carry-on only, never checked. And now there are scanners actively looking for them.
- Fresh food: meat, cured meats, fruit and vegetables face sanitary restrictions. Sealed, packaged products usually pass without trouble.
- Prescription medication: bring it in its original packaging with the prescription to hand. Some controlled medicines need extra documentation.
- Drones: declare them, and check flight restrictions in tourist areas before you fly.
- Cash: more than 10,000 USD must be declared. See customs and cash rules — the penalties are steep.
What actually happens if you bring something you shouldn't
For most restricted items the outcome is confiscation and a delay. For vaping devices and controlled substances the outcome is legal, not administrative — which is why they get their own warning above rather than a line in a list.
Customs uses a random inspection system: you press a button and a light turns green or red. Green means you walk straight out. Red means your bag is searched. It is genuinely random, so "looking innocent" changes nothing.

What should you not bring to Cancun?
Two things catch people out and neither is obvious: vapes and e-cigarettes, whose import into Mexico is prohibited and which are confiscated at the airport, and cannabis in any form, including products legal where you bought them. Beyond that, the usual list: no fresh meat, dairy, fruit or plants, and cash over 10,000 USD has to be declared.
