When to come
The Mexican Caribbean has two variables most destinations do not: sargassum season and hurricane season. Neither should stop you, but both should inform the dates.

Choosing where to stay
This decision matters more here than in most places, because the distances are real.
- Cancun Hotel Zone — 20 minutes from the airport. Big resorts, calm water on the bay side, everything within reach. The easiest first trip.
- Puerto Morelos — 30 minutes. A small fishing town with a reef right offshore. Quieter than anywhere else this close to the airport.
- Playa del Carmen — 50 minutes. Walkable, lively, good food, and the ferry to Cozumel leaves from here.
- Tulum — 1 h 30. Beach clubs and cenotes. Expensive, and the beach road is a long way from the town.
- Isla Mujeres — ferry. Small, slow, and the only beach that never gets seaweed.
- Holbox — 2 h 30 plus a ferry. No cars, sand streets. The furthest and the quietest.
What things cost
Two currencies circulate and you will be quoted in both. A few reference points that are verified:
Carry pesos in cash. Several of the places above — the Tulum ruins entrance among them — do not take cards or dollars at all, and often have no change. Paying in dollars where it is accepted almost always means a poor exchange rate.
Before you pack
- No vapes. They have been banned in Mexico since January 2026, with prison penalties. See what you can't bring.
- Reef-safe sunscreen — regular sunscreen is banned in most cenotes and in protected reef areas. A rash guard solves it entirely.
- Cash in pesos, and not only from an airport exchange desk, which gives the worst rate of the trip.
- Travel insurance — your home health plan almost certainly does not cover you here.
- Closed shoes if you plan on the archaeological sites. The ground is uneven and hot.

The two days everyone wastes. Landing at Cancun takes 35 to 100 minutes from touchdown to walking out, and an international departure wants you at the terminal three hours early — so an arrival day is worth about nine usable hours and a departure day about eight, minus the drive each way. Durations are the ones the operators publish for the full day, plus half an hour of driving each way from the Hotel Zone. Anything in the Riviera Maya adds another hour each way, which is what turns a «tight» into a «no». Check your own flight before you commit to a twelve-hour day.
