Cancun airport taxi

Two different services go by that name here, and telling them apart is what decides the fare. How the counter works, what it costs, and when booking a car beforehand is cheaper.

Verified in August 2026

Two different things get called a taxi at Cancun airport, and the difference is what you pay. One is the official airport taxi, bought at a counter inside the terminal for a fixed zone price. The other is a private car booked in advance, which waits for you with your name on a sign. Both are legitimate; they cost very different amounts.

  1. The airport taxi, at the counterNo meter and no negotiating. You buy a ticket for a fixed zone price and hand it to a dispatcher outside. Nothing to arrange in advance, and typically $65–120 USD per car depending on the destination.
  2. The pre-booked private carBooked before you fly, at a price you already know: from $35 USD for a vehicle that carries up to 8 people. The driver tracks your flight and waits past customs holding your name.

How the airport taxi works

It is not a metered taxi and you do not pay the driver. You buy a ticket at a counter, for a fixed price set by the zone you are going to, and that ticket is what gets you into a car.

  1. Find the counter, inside the terminalEvery terminal has an authorised taxi desk in the arrivals area. It is a counter with a price board, not someone walking up to you.
  2. Give the hotel name, not just the areaPricing is by zone, and the Hotel Zone is a fifteen-kilometre strip. Km 4 and km 20 are not the same fare.
  3. Pay at the counter and keep the ticketCard or cash. Paying in pesos is cheaper than paying in dollars, because the counter sets its own exchange rate.
  4. Hand the ticket to the dispatcher outsideThey assign the car. You do not choose it and you do not negotiate.

Only airport taxis may pick up inside the terminal. That exclusivity belongs to the airport taxi concession and is enforced. It is also why ride-hailing pickups here are not authorised — the ministry’s own wording is on our Uber page. Anyone offering you a ride before the counter is not an official taxi.

What the airport taxi costs

Published figures for the same journey vary widely between sources, and the tariff is revised periodically. Rather than pick one number and present it as firm, here is the range sources agree on and what moves you within it.

Airport taxi, per car — ranges published across sources, August 2026
DestinationRange publishedWhat moves the price
Downtown Cancun$30–35 USDThe shortest run, and the closest thing to a settled figure.
Cancun Hotel Zone$32–90 USDSources disagree sharply. Position along Kukulcan Boulevard is what moves it.
Puerto Morelos$55–75 USD
Playa del Carmen$90–130 USDAn hour each way. Where the ADO bus starts looking attractive.

Why a range and not a price. For the Hotel Zone alone, sources we checked in August 2026 quote anything from $32 to $90 USD for the same trip. That spread is too wide to average into one number and call it information. The counter board is the authority on the day; what we can give you is the shape of the pricing and what changes it.

Airport taxi or pre-booked car

They solve different problems. The taxi needs no planning; the booked car needs arranging before you fly but removes every variable at the other end.

Which vehicle for your group

The price is per vehicle, so the cheapest option for four people is the same one as for eight. Pick by how many seats and how much luggage you need, not by how many of you there are.

Toyota Hiace van or similar Up to 8 passengers Toyota Hiace van or similar Families and small groups. The best value: the price is the same for two people as for eight.
Chevrolet Suburban or equivalent SUV Up to 5 passengers Chevrolet Suburban or equivalent SUV Leather seating and extra legroom, when the arrival is part of the occasion.
VW Crafter or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Up to 15 passengers VW Crafter or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter One vehicle and one booking instead of coordinating three taxis.
Up to 3 passengers Private sedan Solo travellers and couples with normal luggage.

Where the driver actually meets you

Not at the kerb and not in the baggage hall: past customs, in the public arrivals area, holding a sign with your name. The exact spot depends on which terminal you land in.

Meeting point by terminal
TerminalWhere to look
Terminal 2The arrivals hall opens onto a covered walkway. Drivers wait past the line of counters, not inside it.
Terminal 3The busiest exit at the airport. Keep walking to the far end of the barrier, where it is quieter and signs are readable.
Terminal 4Two exit doors. Drivers meet at the one on the ground floor, after the shops.

The people who approach you first are not your driver. Between customs and the exit there is a stretch of desks offering transport and timeshare presentations. Your driver stands still and holds a sign; they do not walk up to you and ask where you are going.

It was a trip to celebrate our anniversary. My wife and I hired a transportation service from the Cancun airport to our hotel, and the driver's attention was one of the best we have ever received.

I found it incredible to have the opportunity of adding stops as an extra service. It certainly helped me go to the store and buy some things before arriving at the hotel, so I would not have to go out again.

Common questions

How much is a taxi from Cancun airport to my hotel?

Between about $65 and $120 USD per car, depending on the zone. The counter board is the authority on the day; sources published online disagree by a wide margin, particularly for the Hotel Zone. A pre-booked private vehicle starts at $35 USD and carries up to 8 people.

Do airport taxis use a meter?

No. You buy a ticket at a counter inside the terminal for a fixed price set by the zone you are going to, and you hand that ticket to the dispatcher outside. You do not pay the driver and there is nothing to negotiate.

Is Uber available at Cancun airport?

Not for pickups you can rely on. Mexico's transport ministry (SICT) stated in a statement of 30 October 2025 that app companies hold no authorisation to collect passengers at the country's airports; the court protection Uber obtained covers how checks are carried out, not a permit. In March 2026 Cancun airport ruled out opening space to the platforms. Being dropped off at the terminal is a different matter and is done routinely. We recommend arranging your arrival another way — the reasons, with sources, are on our Uber page.

Is it cheaper to book a taxi in advance?

For anything beyond a single passenger going downtown, usually yes. The transfer price is per vehicle rather than per car-load, it is fixed before you travel, and it includes the waiting time if your flight is late.

Where do I pay?

At the taxi counter in the arrivals area, before you go outside. Card and cash are both accepted; paying in pesos is normally cheaper than paying in dollars, because the counter sets its own exchange rate.

How much is a taxi from Cancun airport to the Hotel Zone?

Between about $65 and $120 USD per car, bought at a counter inside the terminal before you go outside. The spread is that wide because the Hotel Zone is a fifteen-kilometre strip and the fare goes by zone: km 4 and km 20 are not the same price. Paying in pesos is cheaper than in dollars, because the counter sets its own exchange rate.

Is it safe to take a taxi from Cancun airport?

Yes, if it is an airport taxi bought at the counter. Those are the authorised concession, the price is fixed by zone before you board, and a dispatcher assigns the car outside. What to avoid is anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride before you reach a counter — that is not an official taxi.
