What your passport needs before you fly out of Cancun

The six-month rule, and why it depends on where you are going

The advice you will hear most often is to travel with at least six months of validity left on your passport. It is good advice, and it is worth knowing why: it is not one Mexican rule applied to everyone. It is the requirement of the country you are flying to, and it changes from one to the next.

That matters more here than at most airports. In our own measurement of the flight board, Cancun connected with 19 different countries and 68 cities in a single sample. Two people standing in the same check-in queue can be held to two different passport rules.

Six months is the common case, not a universal one. Some countries ask for validity only through your return date; others count from the day you arrive. The safe move is to check the requirement for your specific destination rather than assume, and Mexico's foreign ministry keeps a country-by-country sheet for exactly that: country requirements.

Condition counts as much as the date

A passport that has not expired can still cause a slow conversation at the desk if it cannot be read. Water damage, a torn or loose page, heavy wear on the photo page, or a chip that will not scan are all worth looking at before you travel, because they are the kind of thing you notice at home and can act on, and cannot fix at the airport.

One point that gets muddled online and is worth stating plainly: a conventional passport remains valid. The electronic passport has been rolling out since 2021, but a traditional booklet that is in date and in good condition is accepted for leaving and entering Mexico. If you have seen otherwise, that claim has been publicly corrected by the issuing authority.

Mexican travellers: the form you fill in before boarding

If you hold Mexican nationality and are flying abroad, there is a short form to complete before you board — the Formato Estadístico para Mexicanos (FEM). Since 26 November 2025 it can be done digitally, from any device, before you get to the airport.

It asks for your flight details — airline, flight number, type of identification, destination and purpose of travel — and produces a receipt you can download and show at boarding. If you have a Llave MX account your personal details load automatically and you only fill in the trip.

It is at the official form, and there are QR codes on posters inside the international terminals if you would rather do it there. During the transition the paper version still works alongside the digital one, so neither replaces the other at the gate.

This is not a document check for foreign visitors leaving Cancun — it applies to Mexican nationals travelling out of the country.

The right moment to look at all this is now, not on the day

Everything above takes five minutes at home and none of it can be resolved at the airport. Renewing a passport takes an appointment and a wait; a destination's rule can be checked in one sitting; the form takes a couple of minutes on your phone.

For the day itself, plan on three hours before an international departure, which is what the airlines here ask for. That window is for check-in, security and the walk to your gate — it is not spare time to sort out paperwork.
