Cancun International Airport managed to register a historic number of operations so far this pandemic, adding 1,075 operations during the weekend, which puts it in the first place compared to other major airports in the country, such as Mexico City Airport with 802,833 travelers and Guadalajara Airport with 675,797.

Last weekend, 550 daily operations were registered, surpassing the record of 514 operations registered at the beginning of 2020, which continues to mean progress in the recovery for the tourism sector that continues to be affected by the pandemic. The increase in the number of tourists has been a fundamental trigger for the business sector in Quintana Roo, as it has boosted the growth of small and medium-sized companies.

Although Cancun International Airport has an extensive list of international destinations, the most common are flights to the United States, with 3,704,484 tourists entering the country between January and October, representing 46.1% of all U.S. travelers entering the country during that period.

On the other hand, some of the most frequent destinations have been: Amsterdam, Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Bogotá, Boston, Calgary, Cali, Caracas, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Istanbul, Philadelphia, Frankfurt, Guatemala, Halifax, Hartford, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas, Havana, and Las Vegas.

Similarly, airlines that contributed to operations included: Air Canada, Air Europa, American, Avianca, Condor, Delta, Eurowings, Frontier, Jet Blue, Spirit, Southwest, Sun Country, Sunwing, Swoop, TAG, TUI, Turkish, Turpial, United, West Jet.

Despite being a challenging year for the tourism sector, the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo is pleased with the increase in international tourism as it represents higher levels in terms of airline seats than those that existed before the pandemic, which in turn results in the development of business, allowing for an increase in the economy and the recovery of tourism.

It is expected that as well as the increase of flights to the Cancun airport, hotel occupancy levels will increase and reach 100% during the holiday season and remain so for the next months of 2022.

Likewise, the government seeks to promote other economic sectors such as gastronomy since Cancun is a very competitive destination and gastronomic tourism plays a fundamental part in tourism distribution and the rate of return.
